vacation? (2024)

a travel dream turned reality turned dream again

Why do we document our lives? Why do we share that documentation with other people? When we approach our lives with the intention to document and share with others, how does that affect the choices we make? Do we make choices in the first place, or is free will an illusion?

In July 2024, I went on a ten day Northern European cruise with my parents as well as two of my aunts and uncles. I went in with the intention to treat it like a mini artist residency or "summer camp" and create something from my experience. I decided on making a Pinterest board to explore the possibilities and limitations of the platform.

If I had used Pinterest as it is intended to be used for a vacation like this, I would have made a board titled something like "dream vacation" and I would have saved ideas for what to see and where to eat, while being served ads and recommended pins for everything I "absolutely must do" or else my vacation "wouldn't possibly be complete."

My Pinterest board "vacation?" intends to show an outside-the-box example of how this platform could be used differently. I don't need Pinterest to tell me how to travel, because I know how to travel. I tell Pinterest how I travel. Although of course...since Pinterest isn't a person...the person who will see my travel documentation is you, the audience.
